Rejoice! The sun came out of hiding (albeit temporarily) and the veggies are unfurling their leaves toward the sky. Planting and weeding are going quite well, thank you.
In the ground: lettuces and greens, scallions and bulb onions, radishes, fennel, chives, potatoes, peppers, cucumbers, chard, kohlrabi, beets, turnips, carrots, green beans, and more. The greenhouse continues to incubate plenty of varieties of veggie seedlings for succession crops.
Our several rosemary plants did not survive the wild winter of 2009. Happily, we've got a variety of new herbs, including rosemary, ready to take over the vacancies in the herb garden.
The garlic bed, planted last October, is beautiful. I admire its orderly rows of bright green tops, anticipating the fat, juicy bulbs lurking underneath the soil. I occasionally snap off a leaf, just to inhale its garlicky aroma. Garlic harvest occurs in July, and we can't wait.
Peas! Thank goodness Nelson planted an extra row of sugar snap peas this year. This "extra" row was decimated by a wicked mole in a matter of a few days. I'm happy to report that the mole no longer resides in the pea patch, or anywhere else for that matter! The untouched rows are thick and thriving.
We've noticed an unusual number of wild rabbits this spring, but the garden fencing is holding fast. The wild rabbits have plenty of forage, and are rapidly multiplying. I wouldn't mind the return of the hawk family right about now, as long as they leave my little hens alone!
Speaking of hens, our joyful chickens are back into full egg production. We added 20 new pullets, which are now over three months old. These little gals should begin laying their first eggs sometime in August. All of the hens are pastured with their goat pals, and are enjoying a fresh, nutritious organic grain mixture to supplement their daily grass, weed, and bug feast. Yum.
Have a glorious Memorial Day weekend! See you in June!
